Al Brownsword’s YouTube Nights from Jake Reynolds on Vimeo.
On a trip to the historic Belgian city of Bruges in the winter on 2014, Al and I finally got around to something that had been on the agenda since at least 2004. No, we hadn’t spent the previous 10 years plotting how many Delerium Tremmons to have at the Bierbrasserie Cambrinus. Instead, in a hazy candlelit bar, we filmed the pilot of the much anticipated and long awaited television series Al Brownsword’s YouTube Nights.
The nebulous concept had floated around since Al’s university days when the night was not for sleeping. Into the small hours he would stay awake, following related videos down an inescapable YouTube click-hole. Marathon viewings of Bad Boys International ensued, to what end even Al did not know. But the videos had to be watched. Sunrise brought reflection. What, why, when will it end. His tales brought us all laughter, and the idea for the show.
Before a roaring fireplace Al would sit, sipping brandy, bier, or a brew, introducing his favourite clips on the internet. In this pilot episode Al reacts to Paul Ware’s winning goal for Stockport County against Carlisle United in March 1996.
The goal is everything that Stockport County now isn’t. A move full of verve and elan finished off with a thunderous stroke of the outside of the boot. Keep Pele, stuff Cruyff, this is Brazil, this is total football. Dave Jones at the helm, reaching the FA Cup third round. The beginning of a bright future pushing towards and into the 1st Division encapsulated by a world class strike by not George Weah, but Paul Ware. The Grandstand theme remix adding to the nostalgia for better days long since passed.
As for the show, episode two is still in the works, maybe another 10 years away. However I won’t let it stop me addressing all TV executives reading with this:
